Spring Cleaning to do list!

Have you started your spring cleaning yet?

Here are 10 tips for a do it yourself spring cleaning.

  1. A great way to clean sponges: mix 3/4 cup of bleach in one gallon of water, and soak the sponge for at least five minutes. If you don’t want to use bleach, microwaving the sponge is one of next best options for killing germs (this method may not kill all e-coli bacteria and certain strains of bacteria!)
  2. Try to vacuum carpets and area rugs weekly. Remember to maintain a carpet’s warranty; you may need to have it cleaned professionally every 12-18 months! We find the best time is in the spring after sitting over the winter season.
  3. A microfiber or lint-free cloth is the best way to dust fixtures and bulbs you can reach. Try an extendable duster for ceiling fans. To clean grimy bulbs, lightly dampen your cloth with vinegar. Make sure light bulbs are off and cool to the touch before cleaning. Spring cleaning is also the perfect opportunity to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors!
  4. For wood furniture, use a homemade recipe to make an all-natural cleaner and polish: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil and 1/2 cup of vinegar or lemon juice in a plastic spray bottle; shake well and spray onto a microfiber cloth.
  5. Try to wash windows on a cloudy day. If it’s too sunny, the cleaning solution will dry too fast and may leave streaks.
  6. Sliding door tracks can catch a lot of dirt and dust from winter which can track into the home. Try scrubbing the tracks with an old, dry toothbrush to loosen debris, then using your vacuum hose to remove it. Finish with a wet sponge.
  7. Grab someone to help move your sofa and chairs, pick up area rugs, and then vacuum the floors. Move your kitchen appliances away from the wall and wash/vacuum behind.
  8. Give your baseboards, door frames, and walls a good scrub-down at least once a year. Wash them with a sponge and a few drops of dish washing liquid mixed in a bucket of warm water.
  9. If window curtains have not been washed for over a year; it is best to give them a good clean if possible. It is always good to vacuum over curtains with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum. To remove dust from sheer curtains, put them in the dryer on low with a fabric-softener sheet.
  10. Rotate and flip mattresses. Have Professionally Steam cleaned to eliminate dust mites! Wash blankets and comforters, or take them to be cleaned. Have pillows professionally cleaned; hang them outside in the fresh air.

Hope everyone has a great spring season and if you would like a break from spring cleaning this year, feel free to give us a call!

Exciting new addition to the family? Remember to have your carpets cleaned!

It can be utterly exhausting trying to keep up with the housework and cleaning in your home, especially when you have little ones. Here at Exact Extract we completely understand how quickly things can build up on a daily basis. We are a family owned and operated business. We have been there and we can help!

Your baby crawls, sits, and rolls around in your home every day. So if you have carpets in your home, it is extremely important to keep them clean to protect your child’s health. Many commercial carpet cleaning companies use harsh chemicals that can be just as harmful to your baby as the dirt or germs that may be living in your carpet. For baby-safe carpet cleaning, it is important to use non-toxic alternatives to chemical cleansers. Exact Extract can use environmentally-friendly cleaning products that are safe for use in homes with little ones. The best thing anyone can do is to maintain a regular household cleaning routine and to start steam cleaning!

Hire a professional or do it yourself?

Shampooing is one of the oldest and successful methods of carpet cleaning. Mechanically operated machine brushes work a cleaning solution into the carpet. Excess moisture and soil are then suctioned away. When the carpet has dried, it is thoroughly vacuumed.
Technology today has yielded various methods as well as a specialized carpet cleaning machines. One of the most popular methods is using do it yourself carpet extractor machines (available for rental in grocery stores.) However, this method is usually a poor choice for several reasons.
Rental or home machines have their “brand name” carpet cleaning solution for purchase. These solutions are formulated to be neutral ph, so that no damaging can occur. However, neutral ph detergents are very soapy. Even when used as directed they leave a lot of residue that acts like a magnet; quickly re-soiling the carpet. It then usually takes 2-3 clear hot water rinses to properly remove the soapy residue. Unfortunately, rental and home machines put a lot of moisture into the carpet; their vacuum power is not strong enough to effectively extract it.
Some homeowners may not be aware that every carpet manufacturer has strong recommendations for the care and maintenance.  Manufacturers also recommend professional carpet cleaning at least once per year; more often for high traffic and heavy soil conditions.
The overall best bet is to take advantage of the services of a trained stream cleaning professional. Some people may be discouraged at professional carpet cleaning prices, but professional carpet care services are well worth the investment; insuring many years of extended carpet life.

Bacteria, Dust mites, and Mold, Oh my!

Carpets and upholstery can act like a big sponge for settled mold, bacteria spores, dust mite allergens and other biological as well as chemical contaminants. These contaminants can cause respiratory problems, especially in children. Bacteria, dust mites, and mold can be associated with a number of respiratory problems including:  coughing and wheezing, Respiratory infections, allergic asthma and bronchitis, as well as eye and skin irritation, fatigue, headache, nausea, and vomiting.

When a carpet is vacuumed its contents become disturbed, contaminants become airborne and are small enough to be inhaled into the lungs. All these contaminants are all different from one another. Molds are larger than bacteria and have more than one cell that grows together, sometimes making it easier to see. Molds tend to grow on anything that can collect dust or moisture. Bacteria are single celled organisms which cannot be seen with an unaided eye.  Different kinds of bacteria can always be found on everything.

Dust mites are everywhere and love to live in mattresses, upholstery and carpets. Dust mites are microscopic in size and feed on our dead skin cells. It doesn’t help when the average human can lose a million and a half skin cells per hour. These little “bugs” play a huge role in causing allergy and asthma symptoms. Health Canada has recognized that dust mites can also cause asthma symptoms in people whom are otherwise healthy. The best thing anyone can do is to maintain a regular household cleaning routine and to start steam cleaning! Steam cleaning is known to kill and remove dirt, bacteria, mold, dust mites, viruses, biological/chemical contaminants and more from carpets and upholstery. This will not only leave your home feeling healthy and clean it will also reduce the chances of experiencing respiratory symptoms related to harmful contaminates.
